The Law Loft took its first formative steps in 1992.
We could see the need for a think tank, a real one, doing analysis,
projections, and strategic planning for ordinary Americans just like
governments around the world and transnational corporations do. Could it
be done with a small budget and a small staff, we asked? With hard work,
yes was the resounding answer. Most information, the important
information, was located in the cracks between disciplines and in odd
mixtures of disciplines like food science, international comparative
analysis, and legislative analysis.
Within the first three years, we had added a
journalistic component. Journalists, the good ones, become experts in
their fields. They have to in order to separate real news and important
information from spin, PR, and propaganda. And unlike the rest of us,
they have access to the world's movers and shakers in time to get the
truth out, to make a difference.
Today more than 10 years later, we are still at it
with a proven track record of good analysis, accurate projections, and
good information. Is analyzing legislation before it becomes law
important? Does it matter whether the public knows what elected
officials and bureaucrats are doing at home and abroad? Do we need to
know about transnational competition to control markets and resources
and shape labor policies around the world? Yes, is the answer if any
semblance of democracy and representative government are to be
preserved.
Today and for years now our primary focus has been on
important trends like emerging international organizations, the struggle
to control world resources, and on preserving those elements of personal
liberty and representative government that are the keys to making
America a place in which we can be proud to live in the 21st century.
Sometimes that means telling people what they don't want to hear.
Oftentimes that means focusing on a story found in the back pages of a
newspaper or news broadcast found here in America or in a foreign
language abroad. Increasingly it means co-operating with foreign
journalists to get good information into the hands of people who need it
when they need it.
Join us in the thoughtful ongoing exploration of the
who's, how's, and why's that shape our world. |
